fortune-telling or divination; it is also one of my favorite methods of doing
psychic readings. The types of cards used for cartomancy are tarot, lenormand,
gypsy oracle cards, and regular playing cards.
Today tarot cards are the most popular cards used for divination. The
original purpose of the tarot deck was for playing games. Since the 1700s it has
widely been used for fortune-telling.
Marie Anne Lenormand was a French fortune-teller who lived from 1772-1843.
She was so well known that she even read cards for Napoleon. After her death,
card makers designed illustrated decks known as "Lenormand style" decks.
These cards usually contained a big image with a smaller image of a playing
card somewhere on the card.
Regular playing cards are also very popular for fortune-telling. Fortune-tellers can
either use a 52 card poker deck or a 32 card piquet deck. I personally like
using playing cards for divination. They can be very accurate and connect the
reader with the cycles of life. There are 52 cards in a deck and there are 52
weeks in a year. There are 4 suits in a deck and 4 seasons in a year. There are
13 cards in each suit and 13 weeks in each of the four seasons. If you add up
all the numbers in a deck where jack is 11, queen is 12, and king is 13, you get
364. Add one joker and you get 365, the number of days in a year.
